This particular design process started with nothing more than a copy of Barney’s already created wedding invite & ideas of chaos and bright colours. When Barney instructed Luke saying “I’m hoping there will be a really lovely contrast between the austerity and lines of the church architecture, & the colour and chaos that the poms will bring” they knew they were going to have some fun creating this bespoke piece.
Barney was always looking for a piece that would stand out. From subtle details like an unusual peak lapel, to using the reverse of a fabric by Dashing Tweeds, creating the effect of a bright multicoloured running stitch pinstripe, rather than the dots intended. We likened this to lines of code that Barney is used to working with.
“Its taken me this long to recover from my wedding (July), hence the delayed review, but my breathtaking suit was such an integral part of the day that I felt worth waiting until I could gather my thoughts in a coherent manner.
I’ve lived in Brighton for 20 years, and pretty much ever since Gresham Blake was established, I knew my wedding suit had to come from there. I am normally in scruffy jeans and not so scruffy trainers, I work from home and haven’t regularly worn a suit since I was twelve, so it was a big deal for me.
The entire experience, from beginning to end, was utterly amazing. I met the designer, Luke, on my first visit, and we spent a long time talking about ideas, and he was able to brilliantly interpret my vision into fabric, in a way I hadn’t imagined was possible. The shop/studio is an awesome environment for such lofty, creative visions, and the atmosphere is inspiring. Once the suit had been designed, it was turned around in an absolutely professional manner, a minor discrepancy between the design and the waistcoat was swiftly rectified, with minimal impact on the overall schedule, and then it was time for the first fitting.
I mentioned I don’t wear suits, or even shirts frequently, but I don’t think that fact was enough to account for the incredible sensation of trying on my suit for the first time. It fit. It really perfectly fit, like I’d never experienced. And it was FIT, unbelievably, unspeakable beautifully, unlike any suit I’d ever seen. It was amazing. Unquestionable the finest suit I’ll ever own (and possibly only one!). The only sad this is that I will be unable to wear it to any other weddings for fear of upstaging the groom.”
